Well got to around 4pm today and I had enough of Excel and data manipulation. Geesh it gets stale.

So I headed for the shop.

Put heater on and got out my scarry sharp setup and put new wet/dry paper on and decided only bad workman blame their tools and i know Ron Hock can make a decent blade so i need to pull my finger out and take time to sharpen it.

Mine if i have the link right is the detail one in the middle.

Oh man this just came on while i am typing so listen while you read. Lol this is supposed to be a carving post and no i have not been drinking......yet.😁

Ok so put my mind to it and what ya know got it sharp. 👍

So on Sat i went to Lv and got a new carving tool and spent my Christmas gift card from Linda. Well with it i sat down and had a go at this tutorial by a lady that reminds me of Carol.
Wonderful instruction step by step progressive carving of a face for caricature little folk.

Used my new tool http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=31090&cat=1,130,43332,43393

I got the detail one $27.90 CDN not bad.

Sharp out the box. Anyway i completed the tutorial and was not happy with my step 8.

Again one is reminded that following something on you tube does not a carver make. There is skill and practice needed.

So....boy i can be long winded, today with Ron Hock blade nice and sharp i went at it tidying up the face features in step 8.

Sometimes one also needs to know when to stop. 😁

Anyway for what its worth here is my attempt.

Then to give you some scale this tutorial is done using a 7/8" square by approx 2" long piece of basswood.

Now had i taken the time to sharpen Ron's knife on Sat i might not have purchased my Flexcut one. But to be fair the blade on the Flexcut detail knife is bit beefy and think where Ron's is thin and pointy so like chisels you can never have enough is my motto.

Its very worthwhile having a go at this tutorial, i enjoyed it and it moves my carving faces along a tad. Give it a try its hard to go wrong with Sharons tutorial.

Looks good from here, Rob. You may still be in the learning stage, but you're already a better carver than me. ;)

Nice! One of the many things I want to get back to doing. Though, been thinking it might be a hobby for my dad to try out when he comes back this spring. He just bought a used scroll saw and has started doing scroll work, but I think he's planning to leave it in AZ and do that during the winter months.

Thanks guys, Darren its a great hobby for travelling with.
Buy your Dad a gift of a flexcut pocket knife as a starter kit.

Made in USA and still a product that deserves the status of what American made used to mean. About $120 us .
