My oldest daughter, Wende, earned her Bachelor of Science degree last December. I finally got a frame finished for her and shipped it to her recently. Here are the steps in the process.
I drew the plans in SketchUp. I made it in three parts: Outer frame in cherry, center section with curly maple wrapped in cherry, inner frame in cherry.
Unfinished, then finished with three coats of gloss Arm-R-Seal and one of satin.
After letting the finish cure a couple of days, I added a piece of 1/8" polycarbonate for the "glass", a double mat and a final piece of cardboard for filler.
Almost final look:
And, the final-final photo from my daughter:
Thanks for looking!
