So, I put together a filament sensor for my anet a8. It was pretty easy to put this together using an Octoprint plug in.
What it does is detect when you run out of filament and will pause the print so you can swap in some new filament and continue the print.
It also serves as the filament guide. It's a friction fit on the top of the printer, and the cover is a tight friction fit too.
I've included all the details at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2515632
