Eastern red Aromatic Cedar...need to save color!

NO PUTTY! It'll only crack and fall out, or even if it stays, will not change color like the wood.

Fill the voids with a two-part epoxy. Do not use 5 minute epoxy - you won't have enough working time to properly fill the voids, plus the 5 minute stuff tends to be brittle. I use System Three's "T-88" which hardens in about half an hour, and cures fully in 24 hours.

For the best UV inhibitor, use a marine finish like Epifane varnish (Expensive, but worth it. Available from Jamestown Marine Distributors.) If you use this, be sure to exactly follow the directions regarding thinning of the first couple coats. That way, it penetrates the wood better.
