A Karate Belt Holder

Made this for a friend to display his Son's Karate Belts.

The idea is it holds 11 Karate Belts on the cross pieces with clips.

I guess there must be 11 steps from start to Black Belt.

Some design short cuts were made to enable using wood that was on hand to keep the costs down, but I think they will like it.

Cherry cross pieces, Oak vertical pieces.

The name is inlayed Padauk into the Oak backing.

Karate Belt Rack

Yes - Made to be hung on the wall.

Used 0.25 Oak from Lowes for the top and sides.

35 watt Epilog Laser cut it easily for the inlay.

Inlay Method

Most of the time for inlays I use the laser to raster out the letters in the base material to maybe 0.080 inches deep. Then cut some thin wood letters to fit. Glue it up and sand it all smooth.

On this one - I cut the letters right out of the 0.25 thick Oak.

Then cut the letters out of 0.125 Padauk. Placed it face down, pushed and glued the letters in. I made sure the letters were just a little proud of the front surface. Then sanded it smooth.

I like this method but many of the items I work with (pen boxes) will not allow this.

I am working on an inlayed sign that I will use at the upcomming Fall Craft Shows.

Laser Cutting

Corey - I use a computer controlled laser to do the cutting.

It is like having a scroll saw with a 0.003 blade that is computer controlled.

The cut out letters do not fit good, they fit perfect.

Entry level lasers start at about $10,000.
