Rotten Birch Bowl (roughed out) - time will tell

John, I've had quite a bit of birch do this to me...I've left it outside "in the elements" for a few months and it was rotten. Had great spalting lines, but I could put my fingernail into it without even pushing. Hope yours hardens up!

Ya can't see how it'll work without trying it. I hope it finishes out for you OK. :thumb:

One of the only pieces I've ever given up on was a chunk of spalted birch that I bought on eBay. It was already cut round in end-grain orientation, so I tried turning a hollow form with it pointed that way. Just trying to shape the sides, I had 3/4" deep chunks coming off the piece. I decided it wasn't worth the time, so now it's somewhere on the floor under my lathe.
