I am going to hook up my Delta 1200 cfm DC with PVC Piping and wanted to get an idea of what I should do.Post pics if you got em.

Welcome aboard, Marc. I won't be of much help for your questions. My DC setup consists of a 20' long piece of 4" flex hose that I move from one machine to the other. Everything is mobile, so at this point it doesn't make sense for me to put in permanent piping. My previous setup had a 4" flex main line, with branches out to several of the main tools. I think I spent as much time opening and closing blast gates as I do simply moving the hose now. (I use a quick disconnect.)

As you probably know, your PVC piping will have less drag than my flex hose. Someday I hope to have a bigger shop where I can set up a more permanent DC solution.

thx vaughn,
I just wanted to get some ideas through pics.I know that woodcraft sell some adapters to connect the 4 " Pvc pipe that you get at home depot to the Flex pipe and Blast Gates.I have seen people use silicon caulk for the blast gatesw and was wondering why.Is it needed?Or is it only because they are not using the special adapters.

Hey Marc...how is this for dust collection?:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I am just joking with you. I don't have pics of my set-up and I doubt you would want to see it anyway. In any case this is a picture of a 1790's sawmill near me. They used the table to flap the sawdust into the barrels. Quite labor intensive, but ingenious too.:thumb:

Welcome to the forum though, and I hope you get better responses then my smart-alec answer.

KISS ! . . .

Simple, simple, simple ! I kept all my PVC same size as blast gates and hoses. Bought the Craftsman kit with hose & gates. Think I had to buy a couple extra gates though. Both sides of the shop go to the corner, meet in a tee then into the vac " cabinet " ( if I may use the word ). I cut a vent from my " cabinet " to the outside for some reason. Vac plugs into an outlet inside my " cabinet ". Outlet is wired to a swtch at each station ( 4 ) individualy ties in to the outlet. NO three way switches ! That was VERY confusing to GI. The smartest thing someone advised to NOT do was to NOT seal anything ! Gates, fittings or hoses. No, no, no ! The PVC seals fine even with just a shop-vac by itself and, I promise you, you'll be takeing it apart to clear stopages at some point ! My simple cheap system is one of the best things I built into the shop. OH ! Install one more gate with just a hose at some point to suck off the bench top. Handy as all getout !

I recently added a port and blast gate for a Ridgid sander to the left of the RAS table but haven't taken a pic yet.
No silicone on connections.......no leaks

I liked that, good one!

My dust collection is much less fancy, just 4" hose running from table saw, jointer, planer to my dc1b Penn State collector.

Well, Marc, so far no one is much help, are they.

I think you would do well to give us some more information. What are the dimensions of your shop, and what sort of gear do you have, and what sort of work do you do?

Someone with a big shop, with lots of big tools, will have different needs, and probably a different DC setup than someone with a small shop, or someone who is primarily a turner, and so on.

I have a small'ish basement shop, and narrow. It's just under 11' wide, and 24-25' long. And, I need to share 10' of it with shelves. So, what suits me is to have a 2HP DC in the corner, like so.

And then hook it up to a 4" PVC pipe, like so
dc-piping1.jpg

which runs about 22' along just one wall. like so,
dc-piping2.jpg

I have a Wye + blast gate for my tablesaw, and another wye + gate for my jointer (share it with the planer when I pull that out) and down at the end another gate that I can use for my drill press or my bandsaw, whichever needs it. I still need to add another wye for my router table or other general use.

Nothing fancy, no runs along the ceiling, and all that, just one short run along one wall. Works for me. So far.

Welcome Marc!!

I built my own Cyclone, and I did the PVC piping too.

Linky Picture

You certainly do not need any joint compound, just slip fit them, use a mixture of water and dish washing soap to slide stuff together, works great.

Use 6" piping, if your DC can handle it, I do not know the specs of your unit, but the difference in the 4" and the 6" is huge.

My system works so very well, I'm certainly glad I built it.

Cheers!

Dear Mr. Watson . . .

Gonna sink the bucks into a Grizzly machine . . . hows the service ? Do we go over the net with plastic ? Over the phone ? Or mail order ? Seems I always pick the wrong one the first time. Are they as good as LV ? Or even close ? THAT'D be a pleasant surprise !

I am not Mr. Watson, but I have bought two machines from them only one problem. I had a bad gear on the planer, which they replaced the whole machine with out any hassle.

Were I to show my dust collection devices, it would be every room of our house as SWMBO insists it settles on all the furniture and bricbrac, When my grand-daughter comes over she says "You have a mess PaPaw" and grabs the devices shown by Jeff Horton. She does a pretty good job :thumb:

Hey Steve, Mr Watson was my Dad. 46, two kids and I am still saying that :D

I had to go down to Bellingham To get the grizzly tools that I have as they don't ship north of the border. I have found no problems with either of the tools that I have gotten from them and I am a picky person when it comes to my tools and the cost ( must be the scottish back ground in my family). I researched everything before I bought and the jointer was rated the best by FWW mag and I found a post about the Grizzly DC system being similar to Bills Pentz design from 2002. I found that the costs for getting any of the other systems was almost double the costs of the Grizzly and I went down in time for the christmas sale cataloge (didn't plan it but it worked out that way) and saved even more money on it. I questioned the rivited impellor but it has worked perefctly so far and came with a wireless remote for no extra cost. I am usually very critical of machines but I have nothing but praise for these. I know that some people don't like Grizz for what ever their reasons but they fit my budget and the tools seem good and the service was great. LV is a totaly different tool store and there is no comparison at all. I mean a car is a car with slight differences but a rolls on the other hand is a work of art. That is about how I could discribe the differences between any other tool line (no disrespect intended) and LV. The LV cataloge is nothing more than Carpenter Porn.

Danke . . .

I'm picky also but after going through $100.00 sanders ( two in ten years from " you-know-who " ) its time to butch up. $ 400.00 just kinda scares me. I'm about pushed over the edge though. AND your right. I don't get to order from LV as often as I'd like but I AM spoiled by the service. I tend to judge all outfits by their standard. And, sorry to say, disapointed most of the time.
