I just open my mailbox and got a package from the legendary Vaughn.

Inside was the most beautiful pen I have ever seen! It is persian turquoise and it is stunning. Vaughn asked me if I minded that is is not wood. I am thrilled!

Along with the pen is some beautiful red euycalyptus, a desert ironwood pen blank and a 30,000 year old Kauri blank with authorization!

Thank you sooooo much Vaughn and please post pics!

You exaggerate, Pete, but I'm glad you like the pen. I really did try to make you a wood pen, but after blowing up a couple of the kauri ones, I figured I'd go synthetic. (Although the blank is allegedly largely powdered turquoise.) Still took me two tries with the turquoise to get it right. ;)

I do like the Sedona kit. This was the first time I've turned a Sedona (or a Baron, which is what my other turquoise pen was made with.)

What is Kauri??

What is Kauri??
Here's some info on the kauri (Agathasis) tree:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathis

In New Zealand, there are companies who dig up giant 30,000+ year-old kauri logs from the swamps, and the wood, once it dries, has a very special iridescence or chatoyance to it.

Here's one supplier:

Pretty simple grain, but it really shimmers like a jewel. Unfortunately, it's also soft and somewhat brittle, so it can be a real challenge to turn a pen out of it.
