Sawdust and curlies

Just want to clarify a point mentioned here. Walnut shavings can make horses real sick. I think it's called founder. The oaks also have lots of tanic acid in them that isn'e real good to put in gardens. I generaly just feed the stuff into my outdoor wood furnace to heat the house and shop in the wintertime.
 
Very true. I'm no expert, but walnut, as well as butternut, have a compound called Juglone, hence their Scientific genus, Juglans. Horses get sick when they eat things that are toxic, or eat too much for that matter, because they are incapable of throwing up. Sucks to be a horse in those circumstances, or the horses owner that has has to either put the horse down or get the horse an operation. I had a horse that had to be put down; the vet said it was too late. Talk about a bummer.
