Pen Blank Swap is Shipped!

Just received the box of wood last week. sorry for the late reply,(I thought
this swap was kaput).

I received a box a year ago from the other swap , and when this one showed up , It was like deja voo ! . I still was like a kid in a candy store looking
thru all the different pieces.

I tooked 6 and left like 20 to fill the box ! ( not the common blanks )
that every one see's at the bottom , but over 1/2 of them should swap out
in a few trips !

Now you got me back turning pens again ! Thanks

will ship out this week . AL (next stop ..... New Hampshire ) !

Sorry for the delay but shipped out friday to Leo in East Freetown Ma.
( as I was looking at the shipping labels I thought about New Hampshire ),
But then there was some one still here in Mass. Maybe Leo will send it thru
to New Hampshire !

WOW - I have not been around here in a while.

I got a box in the mail just over a week ago and didn't know what it was till I opened it.

What a surprise.

Anyway - I took some out and put some in.

Tomorrow the box will be on its way to New Hampshire.

Got this box today or yesterday. It was sitting in the rain and it has poured here so the box is toast. Just found it sitting in the rain about 30 minutes ago. But alas it had a lot of clear tape on it and only a couple of the blanks have any sign of moisture on them at all.:)

I will get a new box and make some swaps and try and get it on the road soon.

I would encourage people to not be bashful about taking blanks as there are a ton of them in there and some I remember from the last round trip. Some beautiful stuff for sure.....

Pictures later as right now I am trying to make a temporary picture window so I caan try and repair the one that the bottom has rotted out on.

I mix up the plexi/acetone, dump wood in, pull vacuum for 30 min. to an hour depending on size of pieces, type of wood, my mood and relationship of venus with the moon.
Are you using a vacuum pump or an air compressor + venturi to pull vacuum?

I found out the hard way the plexi-acetone concogtion to be a little harsh on the seals of a vacuum pump. (I guess the stuff I use isn't plexi most use but the same family according to my supplier of choice waste pieces of this stuff)

Now that I have a 21 gallon Compressor will try the venturi again.
If you go to some of the penturning forums, you will find guys have all kinds of techniques/theories and myths about the best way to stabilize.
I follow my own KISS principal, works for me.
That's true ... almost as many opinions on the proper way to apply a CA finish

I also use the same concoction as a pen finish and it does work well.

Ron, my vacuum pump is a Gast and it uses a system of vanes. I know those vanes will eventually fall victim to the acetone fumes. The pump is designed to be rebuilt from time to time and I accept that as part of the process.
I'll have to try the solution as a pen finish. I made a couple pens the other day intened as gifts and with the finish I normally use they came out really lousy. I was bummed.
