Im hoping to get into the shop again next week, I just wont turn on my TV after sunday football.

one stupid question. Im going to make my grandson some wooden blocks.

does it matter what species of wood I use?

I have some left over 2 bys, but i have alot of sapele and Im thinking cutting and sanding and putting some mineral oil as finish.....is there anything wrong with using sapele? I have alot of it.

not sure I get the sapele dust is dangerous.....almost every piece of furniture Ive made for my daughters house is made of sapele. there is no sapele dust, the only one has to worry about dust is me when Im working with raw wood.
I cut down some leftever 2xs, everything I had left....and got around 60 blocks of all sizes.
I will cut some cherry leftovers and round over each side to make columns, instead of just buying a closet pole.
if at any time I dont think or feel there may be a problem, Ill just toss it. the few I sanded today and rounded over every corner, look great and safe.
thanx for responses

Too late soaked in
Mineral oil and wiped down
I had to toss 16 of them as there was tear out and not able to sand out
My belt handheld belt sander is kaput
The track lining came off and the belts kept ripping

I don't think I've the belt sander more then 5 times since I purchase it 15 years ago
I won't replace it
It had something like a hard plastic type material the belt ran over but that just eroded away
Ended up with 51 blocks

My grandson will get a kick out of these hopefully he won't use them as a weapon to throw at someone

My view on using 2 bys instead of birch or beech
I took my son at 5 shooting with a single shot 22 short chipmunk rifle
My 3.5 year old grandson will not hurt himself with wooden blocks

After they dry if I see a bad spot I'll hand sand it out and re oil

All you need now is a storage box for the blocks
my wife has made several laundry bags with rope pulls, she is going to make a smaller sack for the blocks, probably one with trucks and cars, as that is what the boy loves.

today I cleaned up the shop, no projects on the to do list until after xmas, then finally my son has a built in unit he almost ready for me to measure up....he just has to remove another mirror and do some wall cleanup and painting.

I have someone who wants to pay me for childrens adirondack chairs. while Im not thrilled to make another adirondack chair, as I figure 150 chairs are enough.....I might have to oblige them, but I wont charge them....ill just wait till I get around to it, and get my hands on some of that 1.68 fence slats.

not sure what Im going to do in the shop now that the weather is changing and I have no projects planned, or at least nothing urgent.

I used to kill time making trinket boxes, cutting boards, or outdoor ornaments, no desire now to do any of it, at least not till next spring.

I might have to spend a little time with my wife on our days off.
