UK road construction is now in metric as are run-off and height restriction markers but distance to destination signs are in Miles, as are rural width restriction signs, [<-7ft->] still computes, but carpark width and height are in metric. "Not suitable for HGV" (Heavy Goods Vehicle) could mean anything but don't be surprised to meet a combine harvester coming your way if in rural area, all public footpaths and bridal ways with ancient rights of way are signed in Kilometres but old historic mile markers are left in place.

But if you are trying to judge how far it is to the next hill ridge when out walking, counting the national electricity grid pylons spaced a furlong apart is good.

Just off to the local farmers market for a 1/2 bushel of apples. which will be priced in kilos.
and I suppose you measure measure your walking speed in furlongs per fortnight.
