The story of the control board or the remote failing after a decade or so on these units is not new. My buddy and I decided we needed to apply some science to it . . .
I had been using a simple on/off remote that plugs into the outlet and had hard-wired the motor speed to "medium".
This wasn't really super satisfactory so we (say this like Tim Allen) "rewired it". We added a pilot light so I would know when the unit was energized.
We then added a pull-cord style 4 position switch. I can now pull-cord the unit to the speed setting I want.
The remote still turns the unit on or off. It just happens to come on or off at whatever speed setting I last used. Much better!
