I rarely make boxes although I do like them but never seem to get around having a go, even when I have plenty of suitable offcuts.
Anyway this one has a distinct Asian feel to and it more or less came out as I visualized it. Blackwood and Bamboo, standing around 5.5" high with a dia of 3.75", W.O.P. and buffed.

Thanks for all very positive comments they are much appreciated. Perhaps the one thing than didnt work for me was the choice of the cross. Originally I thought of Mother of Pearl, more precisely Black Mother of Pearl shell. But I couldnt get the thickness I wanted, what I needed an old growth shell as they have the thickness. The Bamboo came out better than expected.

Have you ever considered using bone in applications such as this? It smells when you turn it but it can give you a color that almost no other material except ivory can yield.
Ivory colour now that would go very well with this piece, but not a lot access to bone where I am at present with that I am familiar with bone carving as I started out with carving and in particular Polynesian carving which takes in not only wood but shell, jade and bone. Jade is the one that I havent had a go at. :thumb:

Wow! It's so beautiful I was about to ask if you bought if from somewhere. lol
Does it open?

lol Sorry. I meant to ask how it opens.
Is that little bit part at the top the handle or is it more of a cookie jar.
