Guest cabin

Got the last section of decking installed, I still have to add the last boards against the building, I picked up extra metal strip to do that the other day.

The stairs and railing are temporary, I still need to pour some piers for the landing, but I cut the picture frame trim with the 45* angles already and will use the plunge saw to cut out for the railing posts when that time comes.

Been a while since my last update. Drywall sanding was completed, I got all the walls/ceiling primed last night. Just doing a white ceiling paint for the ceilings, which I plan to do tonight. If there is enough I'll probably do the closet walls with it too. That will let me get the lights installed.

I've ordered some flooring, but will wait to have a sample of it on hand to pick wall and trim colors. I'll do painting prior to installing flooring, then do the trim. I typically paint the trim once before installing then install, caulk & fill, and give it another coat.

I'll probably move on to some outside work, doing back-fill/grading, trenching for water line, and installing septic.

It’s coming along!
 
Decided to dig the waterline trench today. First I needed to locate the electrical feeder in the path of the trench and hand dig it. I knew where the start and end was, so I grabbed my metal detector to set out marking the path. I’ve not used the detector a lot, but it was picking up the ware in the conduit by the cabin and accurately detecting where I knew it was buried. I had a couple of spots where I wasn’t getting tone, but a bit further out, I was detecting something in the direction the paint lines were headed.

I had reused the feeder that her grandpa had installed for what used to be his workshop at the same location, and knew he didn’t bury it very deep, only about 8” - 10”. I started hand digging where the trench was going to cross the line, but I didn’t find anything but a few old nails. :huh:

This ground is hard and rocky, basically clay, a bit of sand, and lots of rocks of various sizes. After about 2 hours of digging and having no luck, I’m fed up. I then remembered I had bought an electrical circuit tracer a while back. I went and got it, plugged in the transmitter in the cabin and started looking. The trace was matching up for the first 15’, then took a turn. Seems my assumption of the path was wrong. The smaller hole here is where the line was actually at.

Did I mention this soil sucks to dig in? Even with a back hoe it’s a lot of work. I guess this might be why we have a few pick axes that are worn to the nub around here.

I got the trench completed this morning. The early spring floods we had left about a foot of sand along the creek bank, so used a few bucket loads to bed and cover the PEX. Got the trench mostly filled tonight.

I still need to make the connection at the house yet after the water softener, but also still need to get the septic holding tank installed
